Summer School
A HISTORY OF CHILDREN’S PARTY GAMES AND VICTORIAN PARLOUR GAMES - 4 AUGUST
Date: Monday, 4th August
Tutor: Julian Smith is an actor, teacher and ukulele player with many years’ experience creating arts projects for young people. He studied for a BA in Theatre Studies at Exeter University and worked as a Theatre-in-Education performer; he later completed an MA in Cultural Studies, focusing on the work of participatory street artists and performers.
Description: From silly physical actions to sometimes complex word challenges, party games have been a big part of many family Christmases or children's birthday parties.
This course explores how many of these games evolved and how they are recorded as part of family history in the works of Jane Austen and Charles Dickens.
Some games may be very familiar, others more obscure. The naming of games (such as "Elephant's Foot Umbrella Stand") also gives us an insight into the social values and culture of the time.
We will definitely be playing some of the games - so please be prepared to embrace your inner child.
