ALL THE WORLD’S A STAGE: FROM PULCINELLA TO PUNCHDRUNK - 4 AUGUST

Date: Monday, 4th August

Tutor: Kathryn Martin. I was raised on the Norfolk coast and trained at  Mountview Theatre School but shifted to teaching. I’ve taught at various schools,  founded a children’s theatre school and performed in a covers band.

Description: Through my four sessions I will be exploring some of the significant practitioners who have shaped the development of western theatre. Starting with a workshop on the stock characters of Commedia Dell Arte looking at how we still see them in Panto (Oh yes we do!) and some of our most beloved comedies such as Blackadder and Fawlty Towers.

I’ll then move on to explain the influence of Stanislavski who is considered the father of modern acting and his “system” and then onwards again to Brecht who saw theatre not as a “mirror to reality but a hammer with which to shape it”.

Finally, I will examine some of our most influential current practitioners such as Frantic Assembly and Punchdrunk who have respectively developed a physical approach to exploring emotions and relationships and developed an immersive theatrical experience where the stage really is the theatrical world.
