CHRISTOPHER WREN 5th August
AND THE ENGLISH BAROQUE
Wednesday 5th August
Tutor: Keith Hasted has a Masters in History of Architecture and is the author of a recent book on Modernist Architecture in Britain. He lectures at Oxford University Continuing Education and for the WEA. 26
We will investigate the extraordinary range of architecture produced by Christopher Wren in the universities, the post-fire City of London churches including St Paul’s cathedral, and in his magnificent royal works including Hampton Court Palace and the Greenwich Royal Hospital.
2026 marks 300 years since the death of John Vanbrugh. Wren’s work led on to the “English Baroque” style, seen dramatically in the buildings of Vanbrugh such as Blenheim Palace and Castle Howard. We will also see how the career of Nicholas Hawksmoor expanded from his role as a leading assistant to Wren and Vanbrugh to the production of extraordinary buildings in his own right.
