GAUDI’S EXTRAORDINARY ARCHITECTURE - 31 JULY
Date: Thursday, 31st July
Tutor: Keith Hasted has a Masters in History of Architecture and is the author of a recent book on Modernist Architecture in Britain. He lectures at Oxford University Continuing Education and for the WEA.
Description: A look at the remarkable work of Antoni Gaudi, discovering some of his underlying principles and placing his designs within the cultural context of Catalonia at the turn of the twentieth century.
As Barcelona expanded rapidly Gaudi was creating remarkable buildings. In houses like the Casa Batllo, he brought new thinking to every aspect of design. However, his Temple of the Holy Family (the Sagrada Familia) has been his most fascinating project. We will look at his exceptional contribution to architecture. In the day-school we will start with a look at architecture of the time in Catalonia, contrasting with Gaudi’s early works, then go on to look in detail at the Temple of the Sagrada Familia.
